GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— A school-record smashing time of 3 minutes, 48.89 seconds in the 4x400-meter relay and two wins each from in-form
Sierra Arceneaux and
Kiana Jackson led the Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's track & field team to team victory on Sunday at the Maverick Sun Classic.
The Maverick women, ranked a program-high 13
th nationally, combined to win seven events on the day as finished first amongst the three competing teams with 116 team points. Western Colorado took second with 97 while Colorado Christian was third with 58.
The Maverick "A" relay team of Arceneaux, who also won the 100 meters,
Mica Jenrette,
Jade Wimmer and
Sophie Lindauer, closed out the meet with their time that bettered the former Maverick standard of 3:52.53, set in 2017, by an impressive 3.64 seconds. CMU's "B" team of
Jordyn Pittman,
Haley Golden,
Averie Griffith and
Amber Valdez was the only other team in the race and posted a time of 3:52.70, which was just 0.17 off the former record and now the third fastest in school history.
Meanwhile, Jackson was victorious in both the 110-meter hurdles and triple jump. She led a 1-2-3 finish in the hurdles with a time of 14.82 seconds. Griffith was second in 14.99 and now ranks eighth in program history. Jenrette finished third in 15.43.
In the triple jump, Jackson turned in an effort of 11.55 meters (37 feet, 10 ¾ inches).
Arceneaux turned in a winning time of 11.85 seconds in the 100, just 0.01 slower than last week's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference-leading, NCAA provisional qualifying and track-record setting effort of 11.84. Teammates
Rachel Crutcher (12.30) and Golden finished third. Crutcher now ranks sixth in CMU history.
The Mavericks also won the 200 meters as
McKenna Molder posted a mark of 24.90 seconds to rank fourth in program history.
In other field events, freshman
Taeryn Trumper, competing unattached, won the long jump with a leap of 5.69 meters (18-8) in her collegiate debut and now ranks fourth in program history.
Kierra Arceneaux also had a strong mark of 5.62 meters (18-5.25) to place second and rank fifth in CMU history.
Freshman thrower
Meleeah Holmes-McKown also claimed her first collegiate outdoor win by taking the discus throw with a toss of 34.92 meters (114-7) while finishing second in the shot put and hammer throw.
Other notable performances included an 800-meter run from Valdez, who placed second with a time of 2:18.42, and a second-place finish from
Lydia Dawson in the pole vault. Dawson cleared 3.02 meters (9-10.75) on her first attempt to move into the No. 4 spot in CMU history.
Morgan Badgley also cleared the same height and finished third.
