GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— After being recognized during Senior Day festivities, Colorado Mesa University's
Thiago Nejm posted a pair of wins to help the Maverick men's tennis team claim a 5-2 win over visiting Colorado College on Saturday afternoon here at the Elliott Tennis Center.
Nejm's 6-2 No. 2 doubles win with partner
Christian Albrechtsen allowed the Mavericks to clinch the doubles point. The fourth-year Maverick out of Rio de Janiero, Brazil then posed a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) victory at No. 5 singles as the Mavericks wrapped up the regular season with a 9-7 record heading into next week's Pacific West Conference Tournament in Surprise, Arizona.
CC fell to 1-6 as the Mavericks defeated them for the second time in eight days. CMU had claimed a 6-1 win last Saturday in Colorado Springs.
Nejm and current Maverick volunteer assistant coach Alain De La Basitde, who had his 2020 senior season cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic were recognized before Saturday's match.
Once play got started, the Mavericks got off to a strong start as
Steven Howe and
Jandre van Wyk won for the eighth straight time in doubles play, claiming a 6-1 win over the Tigers' top pair of Sam Hum and Jacob Adams. Howe and van Wyk are now 13-3 on the year and on pace to set the Mavericks' single-season doubles winning percentage record.
Nejm and Albrechtsen then won at No. 2 giving the Mavericks the doubles point despite CC's No. 3 doubles win, which came by a 7-5 score.
With playing shifting to singles, Hum got the Tigers on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Albrechtsen at No. 1 singles before the Mavericks went on to win the next four matches in the middle four rungs of the singles ladder.
Van Wyk was the first Maverick to claim a singles triumph as he won his team-leading 23
rd overall match of the year, with a 6-3, 6-1 No. 4 singles win over Adas.
Moises Cure then scored a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0 win over Billy Taylor at No. 3 singles before Howe secured the Mavs' team win after coming from a set down to defeat Andrew Kaelin at No. 2 singles, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Nejm then won his match before CC's Alex Baum wrapped up the action with a 3-set win at No. 6 singles over CMU's
Chapin Schott.
