CMU takes down Austin and Colorado Colleges in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University men's tennis team won all 18 combined matches as the Mavericks blanked Austin College and host Colorado College by identical 7-0 scores here at Memorial Park on Saturday.

The Mavericks, who improved to 8-6 on the season with the victories over the Kangaroos (3-6) and Tigers (0-4), dropped just one set throughout the day.

Against Austin College, the Mavericks swept the doubles matches with 6-1 victories from Tyler Landen and Christian Albrechtsen at No. 1 and Moises Cure and Thiago Nejm at No. 3 while Steven Howe and Jandre van Wyk had to battle for a 7-5 win in the second flight over the 'Roos' Callum Robe and Tate Nelson.

In singles play, the Mavericks won five of the six singles matches against the Roos in dominating fashion as Albrechtsen, Landen, Cure, van Wyk and Nejm lost just eight games combined in quite comfortable victories.  Howe also pulled out a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) win at No. 2 singles over Preston Spivey to complete the shutout.

In the afternoon match against CC, the Mavericks were nearly as dominant, although CC did put up a fight in doubles play as all three matches were decided by 2-game margins by either 6-4 or 7-5 scores.

In singles play, the Mavericks swept all six matches in straight sets.  Albrechtsen and Cure were the most dominant Mavericks.  Albrechtsen won his No. 1 singles affair over Jack Delafield, 6-1, 6-1 after winning his match over Austin College's Brett O'Brien, 6-0, 6-2 to snap an 8-match singles slide.

Cure was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over the Tigers' Jacob Adams at No. 4 after defeating the Roos' Joseph Carillo, 6-2, 6-0.

Howe and van Wyk are now 11-3 in doubles and have won six straight matches together.

Nejm now leads the Mavericks with his 9-4 singles record.  Cure (8-5) and van Wyk (8-4) are right behind in singles wins.

The Mavericks will wrap up their regular season at home at the Elliott Tennis Center next weekend hosting PacWest Conference rival MSU Denver on Friday at 1 p.m. before a re-match with the Tigers on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.  That match will be preceded with 1:15 p.m. Senior Day festivities.
