IRVINE, Calif.— Sabrina VanDeList and Ashton Reese won their first match to lead the Colorado Mesa University Beach Volleyball team's efforts in Tuesday matches against Concordia University-Irvine and nationally-ranked Long Beach State University here at Great Park.
 
VanDeList and Reese won their No. 5 affair with CUI's Alex Omaszta and Shannon Evans by a 21-19, 21-9 margin to capture their team-leading fourth win of the season.  However, the Mavericks were downed by the Eagles, 4-1 overall.  LBSU then defeated the Mavericks, 5-0 as CMU slipped to 3-6 as a team on the year.  The Beach, which was ranked 19th in the latest AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll, which came out on Tuesday afternoon, also took down the host Eagles, 5-0 to move to 6-6 on the year.  CUI is now 3-4 with the Tuesday split.
 
The Mavericks' Mary McGinnis and Rianne Brown also posted an exhibition win against CUI, defeating Sofia Parisi and Lauren Clifton, 22-20, 21-16. 
 
The Mavs came up short in the rest of the matches although Maddi Foutz and Holly Schmidt won the first set of their No. 1 encounter with Concordia's Ellie Cary and Vanessa Bernzen by a 22-20 score.  However, the Eagle duo took the second set, 21-10, and the third, 15-5, to win the point.
 
All six of the matches with LBSU, including the exhibition affair were settled in straight sets although Foutz and Schmidt pushed the Beach's top pair of Mari Molina and Tyler Spriggs, to a 22-20 first-set score before falling 21-15 in the second.
 
CMU will resume their beach season on Apr. 2-3 competing in the Arizona Invitational in Tucson although many of the Mavericks will play in two key Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference indoor volleyball matches at Western Colorado University and the Colorado School of Mines on Saturday (Mar. 27) and Monday (Mar. 29), respectively.
