BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— 100-yard breaststrokers
Mahmoud Elgayar and
Lily Borgenheimer led another solid day of Colorado Mesa University efforts on Friday, the third of four days of competition at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, which continue through Saturday here at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
Elgayar finished fourth in the men's portion of the event while Borgenheimer, who broke her own school-record in the morning preliminary session, took fifth in the women's championship final.
The women's 800 free relay team also finished fifth as that squad, two women's 100-yard backstrokers and junior diver
Jolynn Harris also scored team points throughout the day as the Maverick women remained in 12
th place with 128 team points through Friday. The Maverick men are in 13
th with 80 points, getting 15 from Elgayar on Friday.
The relay squad of
Lauren White,
Kelsea Wright,
Katerina Matoskova and Borgenheimer finished fifth in 7:28.40 to record the Mavs' highest ever national championship relay finish. The time was also just off the Mavs' altitude-adjusted school-record of 7:26.22, set at last month's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
Harris finished tenth in the women's 3-meter diving competition with a score of 415.85 points on 11 dives after placing second on the 1-meter on Thursday.
In the 100 back, freshman
Elsa Huebsch finished 14
th overall and sixth in the consolation final with a time of 55.95 seconds, just 0.01 off her personal-best. White, the Maverick record holder at 55.03, finished 16
th overall with a time of 55.99 seconds after posting a time of 55.77 in the preliminaries.
Elgayar then posted a time of 53.54 seconds, just off his Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference-winning and school-record setting time 53.40 (altitude-adjusted) from last month.
Minutes earlier, Borgenheimer touched in 1:02.29, her second fastest time at CMU.
She really shined in the morning emerging as the top overall qualifier in the preliminaries with a time of 1:01.97, eclipsing her own school-record of 1:02.54 (altitude-adjusted), which had been set on Jan. 8 at the Air Force Duals.
In other preliminary round action, the Mavericks had three women in the 500 Free. Matoskova led the group taking 23
rd in 5:01.82
Kelsea Wright was 26
th in a time of 5:02.38, a new season-best, which moves her up a spot to eighth in program history.
Robyn Naze was 29
th in 5:04.27.
In other men's preliminary round action, Maverick sophomore
Matheus Laperreire finished 20
th in the 500 free, touching in 4:32.96. Freshman
Ben Sampson then finished 18
th in the 100 back, with a time of 48.45 seconds.
