Naze school-record, 200 IM efforts lead Mavs on Day 1

NCAA meet postponed by tornado warnings

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—  Robyn Naze smashed her own school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle and is guaranteed a scoring position while Lily Borgenheimer and Mahmoud Elgayar both qualified for the consolation final in the 200 individual medley, highlighting Colorado Mesa University's brief first day of action at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships here at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The rest of Wednesday's action was then postponed due to tornado warnings and the related closure of the facility for the rest of the day.  The diving preliminaries and the evening finals session were not contested.

Full details of how the schedule for the rest of the meet will be altered have yet to announced by the NCAA although action is expected to resume on Thursday at noon CDT (11 a.m. Mountain). Updated information will be posted here when it is announced.

Borgenheimer was the first to do as she posted a time of two minutes, 3.86 seconds, finishing 12th out of 22 swimmers in the preliminary heats to qualify for the "B" final.  Her time is the fastest flat time in CMU history and just off her altitude-adjusted school-record time of 2:03.05, which was turned in with her Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship winning effort of 2:04.25 last month.

In the men's 200 IM preliminaries, Elgayar posted a personal-best of 1:48.62 to finish 13th.  He also moved up three spots to second in program history.  Teammate Matheus Laperreire also set a new best of 1:48.99 to finish 20th out of 29 men.  He continues to rank fourth in program history, moving ahead of Matthew Barrett.

In the men's 50 free, freshman Ben Sampson made his NCAA Championship debut, finishing 29th with a time of 20.36 seconds.

Naze then took to the pool and posted a time of 10:13.91 in the 1,000 free, breaking Katelin Staab's 4-year-old CMU record of 10:16.33.  Naze, a first time NCAA qualifier, currently sits in eighth place although the top eight seeds have yet to swim as they were scheduled to compete in the Wednesday finals session.  Naze, who will finish no lower than 16th, was seeded 24th coming into the meet at 10:19.10.
