ROME, Ga. – The Colorado Mesa men's lacrosse team got into the winner's column Friday afternoon, grounding the Shorter Hawks, 23-3.
The offensive threat was not lacking Friday, as the Mavericks used big first and fourth quarters, scoring multiple goals in each quarter en route to a dominant victory. The defense also limited the Hawks to just three goals on the day, and caused nine turnovers.
Dylan Checketts and
Cole Emmanuel split face off duties, Checketts going 12-of-17 with six ground balls, and Emmanuel finishing 8-of-12 with seven ground balls.
Jed Brummett set the standard with five goals on the day, also picking up a ground ball.
Jake Keyes recorded the next highest amount of goals with three, assisting on another, along with two ground balls.
Joey Quinn stepped into the goal for the Mavs recording 12 saves on the day.
Brummett opened play with a pair of goals within minutes of each other.
Drew Eickelman matched that performance with a pair of goals, en route to a 7-0 run for the Mavericks. Just before closing the first quarter, Shorter notched their first goal off the stick of William Millwood.
The Shorter defense allowed Colorado Mesa to score just three times in the second quarter, while picking up another goal for a 12-2 score.
The Hawks scored their final goal of the game in the third quarter, and the rest of the game the Mavericks took over and continued to build their lead.
DeAndre Ross picked up his first goal of the season, capping off the scoring for the Mavericks.
The Mavericks will close out their road trip against Alabama Huntsville, tomorrow (Mar. 13) at 10 a.m.
