BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— Colorado Mesa University redshirt sophomore
Mica Jenrette set new personal-bests in each of the five disciplines while smashing her own 2-week old school record in the pentathlon to take sixth in that event at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships, which got underway here at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Thursday.
The Los Lunas, New Mexico native scored 3,781 points in total to easily surpass her Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference winning, national-qualifying and former Maverick record setting of 3,560 points on Feb. 26 in Spearfish, South Dakota.
Jenrette finished first amongst the ten national level pentathletes in the 800 meters, the last of the five events, with a time of two minutes, 16.59 seconds and also broke the 11-year old school record in that event, which had been held by Maverick great
Alexis Skarda since 2010 at 2:18.48.
Jenrette, the first CMU women's multi-event athlete to ever qualify for the NCAA Championships or win the RMAC title, started her day with a PR-setting time of 9.26 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, to take over the No. 9 position in Maverick history and score 856 points. She shaved 0.13 seconds off her former PR, set at the RMAC Championships.
She then cleared 1.61 meters (5 feet, 3 ¼ inches) in the high jump to move up to seventh in CMU history while scoring another 747 points. That was three centimeters (1 inch) better than her former best.
Jenrette then posted a mark of 10.97 meters (36-0) in the shot put to score 523 more points and surpass her former personal-best of 10.41 meters (34-2) with ease.
In the long jump, the fourth event, Jenrette leapt 5.55 meters (18-2.5) to score 715 points while moving up to fifth in program history.
She then bested the rest of the field in the 800 by 2.60 seconds while moving up three spots to sixth in the overall standings.
Saginaw Valley's Cheyenne Williams won the event with 4,113 points while Trace Mosby was second with 3,966.
Jenrette's sixth place finish and three team points puts the Mavericks in a tie for ninth place in the overall team standings through two events. She will also run on the Mavs' 4x400-meter relay team on Saturday while teammates
Josie Coffey (high jump) and
Sierra Arceneaux (200-meter preliminaries) will compete on Friday. Tony Torres (mile) and Justin Thompson (high jump) will also compete for CMU's men on Friday.
