GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's wrestling won eight of the ten bouts and gave No. 19 Western Colorado a 33-6 loss on Thursday evening in Brownson Arena in front of a raucous crowd of both Maverick and Mountaineer fans.
The win by the Mavericks is the largest margin of victory for the Mavericks in the all-time series and the largest margin of victory in any of the duals since 2009.
The night began with a revenge match of sorts. Colorado Mesa's
Dawson Collins earned a 7-5 win over Mountaineer Cody Fatzinger to open the dual. Fatzinger defeated Collins at the Younnes Hospitality Open in Kearney, Neb. roughly three weeks ago.
With the Mavericks winning the first of two highly anticipated matchups, the lone nationally ranked bout entered at 133 pounds as No. 3 Patrick Allis of Western Colorado and No. 11
Collin Metzgar of Colorado Mesa squared off. The underdog came out on top as Metzgar scored a 5-2 win after scoring two takedowns and the riding time point to give the Mavericks a 6-0 lead in the dual.
If you were looking for fireworks, the 141-pound bout had it all. Former Western Colorado wrestler now Maverick,
Erik Contreras, was set to lock horns with No. 7 ranked Dean Noble. Noble took a 2-0 lead in to the second period and elected the bottom position, on his first standup attempt, Contreras locked up a near-side cradle and wound-up pinning Noble in it at the 3:45 mark of the match, giving the Mavericks a 12-0 lead in the dual.
Western's Jason Hanenberg ended the threat with a 4-2 win over
Nick Gallegos at 149 pounds.
Colorado Mesa's
Ryan Wheeler nearly put the dual out of reach at the halfway mark of the dual as he pinned Cole Mortenson at the 1:11 mark of the bout to give the Mavericks a 18-3 lead in the dual.
The Mountaineers edged closer as Hunter Mullin earned a win over true freshman
Alex Holguin 6-4 in the 165-pound bout.
That led to the strongest part of the Mavericks lineup with murder's row of Latham, Krone and Negus. Latham scored an 8-2 win over Jimmy LaConte at 174 pounds followed by a 15-0 technical fall win for
Nolan Krone at 184 pounds to seal the win in the dual. There was still business to take care of in the final two bouts.
No. 4 ranked
Donnie Negus scored a 16-5 win at 197-pounds over a pesky Porter Fox of Western to make the dual score 30-6 heading to the final bout of the evening.
Redshirt freshman
Gabe Carranza pulled a personal victory in the final bout with a 6-3 win over Sammy DeSeriere. The two had met previously with DeSeriere winning the previous two matchusps.
The win in the dual was also a personal victory for head coach
Chuck Pipher as he picked up his second win over his son Charlie in the series. Charlie, the head coach of Western Colorado, held a 6-1 mark in the family series heading into this evenings dual.
Colorado Mesa will head off to the Midwest Classic next weekend in Indianapolis.
