GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—
Lily Borgenheimer and
Lauren White set meet records while Borgenheimer and diver
Jolynn Harris won events to lead the Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's swimming and diving team on Friday at the A3 Performance Invitational.
The Mavericks, ranked a program-high seventh in Division II according to last week's CSCAA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, have now won nine of the 15 events contested over the first three days of the meet and are clinging to a 60-point (852-792) lead over hard-charging NCAA Division I Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks won the other five of Friday's seven events on their best day of the meet, which concludes Saturday with competition in six more scoring events.
The Colorado School of Mines is in third of the 6-team with 452 points.
White broke her own meet record in the 100-yard backstroke during the morning preliminary session, touching in 55.02 seconds, good for one of CMU's five NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying swimming times. She then took second in the final at 56.00 seconds while
Katerina Matoskova (4
th, 56.73) and
Sarah Fillerup (5
th, 57.00) also finished in the top-5.
In the afternoon, Harris duplicated her Thursday 1-meter win, with a victory on the 3-meter springboard, diving to a score of 457.80 points, well over the NCAA qualifying standard of 420. Teammate
Ali Lange was second with 395.90 points in the finals after posting a score of 410.15 in the preliminaries.
Borgenheimer then highlighted the night session, blazing to a time of 1:02.08 to win the 100 breaststroke by 1.35 second over a pair of Lumberjacks.
With the 1/10 of a second altitude-adjustment, Borgenheimer now ranks third in Division II this history at 1:01.98, just off her school-record of 1:01.97, set at last year's NCAA Division II Championships.
In other evening action,
Bella Walters took fourth to lead the Mavs in the 100 fly with a time of 58.05 seconds. She was a bit quicker (58.03) in the morning.
Davy Brown then placed fourth in the 400 IM at 4:34.21 after turning in the top qualifying time of 4:33.76, a NCAA "B" cut mark, in the preliminaries.
The Mavericks then had three NCAA "B" cut finishers in the 200 free as the Mavericks went 2-3-4 in a strong event. White led the charge at 1:51.19 while Matoskova (1:51.54) and
Kelsea Wright (1:51.63) were right behind. Wright had posted a time of 1:53.61 in the morning session as well.
The Mavericks then finished second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:48.22 turned in by White, Borgenheimer, Walters and Brown.
The Mavericks are looking for their fifth straight A3 Performance Invitational team victory and will compete in six more scoring swimming events on Saturday. Preliminary heats begin at 10 a.m. while finals will get underway at 4 p.m. Exhibition diving events will also be contested in between.
The Maverick men will also be in search of their fifth straight title and have swept all 15 events thus far.
