COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's
Holly Schmidt and
Sabrina VanDeList have been named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Volleyball Offensive Player and Setter of the Week, it was announced on Monday afternoon by conference officials.
The offensive player of the week honor is the first for Schmidt and comes on the heels of her strong Senior Night match. The fourth year redshirt junior Maverick outside hitter from Castle Rock, Colorado recorded 31 kills, an average of 3.44 per set, and hit .316 during the Mavericks' 2-0 week. She tallied a season-high 18 kills and hit .450 in last Tuesday's (Nov. 9) win over Westminster and then came back to put down a team-high 13 kills in Friday's (Nov. 12) win over nationally-ranked (No. 23) Regis, helping the Mavericks clinch the No. 3 seed in this week's RMAC Tournament, ahead of the Rangers.
Schmidt, who has decided to forgo a fifth season of eligibility to focus on her academic pursuits, was recognized before Friday's match during Senior Night festivities and finished the Mavericks' 2-0 week with three aces, 11 digs and a block while averaging 3.89 points per set.
Meanwhile, VanDeList, named as the RMAC Setter of the Week for the third time this fall and for the sixth time in the 2021 calendar year, tallied 120 assists (13.33/set), 35 digs (3.89/set) and four service aces (0.44) while setting single-match career-highs in all three categories last week.
The Severance, Colorado native also recorded a pair of double-doubles, her team-leading eighth and ninth of the season. In Tuesday's win over Westminster, she set new career-highs for assists (63) and aces (4) while registering 14 digs. VanDeList also had three kills and hit .500 in that match before coming back on Friday with 57 assists and a career-high 21 digs in Friday's 4-set win over Regis. Her 63 assists were the most of any Maverick in a single match in more than five years.
With their two wins last week, the Mavericks finished the regular season with a 20-5 overall and 15-3 RMAC record. They won 12 of their last 13 regular season matches and will look to use that momentum to their advantage in a RMAC Tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday night at 7 o'clock in Brownson Arena, where they have won eight straight matches.
The Mavericks will take on sixth-seeded Colorado Christian (11-15, 8-10 RMAC).
