Outsides lead Mavericks to 3-set sweep at FLC

Hunt records career-high 17 kills, first double-double of the fall to pace CMU

DURANGO, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University outside hitters Sierra Hunt and Holly Schmidt combined for 28 kills as each hit over .300 to lead the Maverick volleyball team to a 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference sweep over host Fort Lewis College on Friday evening here in the Skyhawks' Whalen Gymnasium.
 
The victory was CMU's tenth of the season and was their seventh 3-set sweep of the campaign.
 
Hunt, a redshirt freshman finished with a career-high 17 kills and added a season-high 10 digs to record her second double-double of the season.  She also hit .375.  Schmidt hit .310 and put down 11 kills while former Skyhawk Tye Wedhorn, recorded seven kills and a match-high six blocks from the middle to aid CMU's cause in her return to Whalen Gymnasium.
 
Maverick libero Kerstin Layman had a match-high 17 digs while setter Sabrina VanDeList registered 42 assists, seven digs and two service aces.  Right side Maranda Theleus also chipped in six kills while hitting .364.
 
The Mavericks (10-4, 5-2 RMAC) out-hit the Skyhawks (2-9, 2-5 RMAC) by a .288 to .080 margin throughout the 75-minute match and doubled them up in total kills, 50-25.  The Mavericks also had a 7-4 advantage in blocks and a 53-33 edge in total digs.
 
The Skyhawks scored the first four points of the match and later led the first set, 11-9 before the Mavs went on a 4-1 run featuring back-to-back kills from Hunt an a service ace by VanDeList to take the lead 13-12.
 
Another 5-2 run then helped the Mavericks build an 18-14 lead before FLC pulled back within one at 22-21.  After an exchange of points, Hunt put down a kill before a Skyhawk hitting error gave CMU the first set.
 
Hunt finished the first set with eight kills.
 
The Mavericks then roared to big early leads in both the second and third sets, never looking back. 
 
In the second, the Mavericks had a .243 to zero advantage in team hitting percentage, building a 14-4 lead as Schmidt tallied six of her kills in the middle frame.
 
The Mavs led by as many as 13 points (21-8) in that set.
 
In the third, CMU hit at an impressive .429 clip as Hunt and Schmidt combined for ten kills.  The Mavericks jumped out to an 11-3 lead and led by as many as ten at 20-10 in the final set.
 
CMU will conclude a 4-match road stretch on Saturday at 6 p.m. when they head to Gunnison for an encounter with Western Colorado (9-6, 4-3 RMAC), who won a 4-set match over Westminster on Friday.
