Mavericks sweep RMAC Swim/Dive awards

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— After strong performances in last weekend's season-starting Intermountain Shootout, the Colorado Mesa University Maverick swimming and diving teams swept the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's Athlete of the Week awards, it was announced by the conference on Thursday afternoon.

Jolynn Harris was named as the RMAC Women's Diver of the Week for the sixth time in her career while Tanner Belliston received the men's award for the second time.  Ben Sampson, last year's RMAC Freshman of the Year, was named as the Men's Swimmer of the Week while Lauren White claimed the women's award for the fourth time in her career.

Harris, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, defeated 22 combined NCAA Division I divers in the Intermountain Shootout.  She scored 248.60 points on six dives off the 3-meter board on Friday evening to place fourth out of 15 divers as she finished higher than 10 Division I athletes.  The redshirt junior then scored 246.80 points off the 1-meter on Saturday finishing third out of 18 and ahead of 12 Division I athletes.  Harris was the NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up on the 1-meter last spring.

Her scores are the second (1m) and third (3m) best in Division II thus far this season according to Swimcloud.

Meanwhile, White set three NCAA Division II leading times and a pair of national championship provisional qualifying times over the weekend.  The Golden, Colorado native won the 100 back in 56.61 seconds (altitude-adjusted) and set her NCAA "B" cut times of 1:52.09 (200 free) and 2:02.39 (200 back) in second place performances in the 9-team meet, which included five Division I teams.

White, a 10-time all-America redshirt sophomore, also posted the nation's No. 2 ranked 50 back time of 26.89 and the No. 4 ranked 100 free time of 52.89 as the lead-off leg on Maverick relay teams helping lead CMU to a comfortable 277-123 dual win over Dixie State, CMU's first Division I wins since November, 2016.

The Maverick women also extended their RMAC dual-meet winning streak, which dates back 5 ½ seasons, to 27 with wins over Adams State and CSU-Pueblo.

On the men's side, Belliston, a redshirt junior out of Wasilla, Alaska, defeated seven combined Division I divers as he turned in a pair of fifth place finishes to help lead the Mavericks to a combined 3-1 dual-meet record and their first ever win over Air Force last weekend.  On Friday, he turned in a career-best 6-dive score of 255.55 points on the 1-meter to defeat three Division I divers, including two from Air Force.  Belliston, a First Team CSCAA All-American on both boards at last year's national championships, then scored 255.15 points on six dives off the 3-meter board on Saturday to defeat four Division I divers, including three Falcons.

Sampson, a redshirt freshman from Arvada, Colorado, posted a pair of national-leading times as he won the 100 back in an NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying time while placing second in the 100 IM and third in the 200 IM.  On Friday, he won the 100 back in an NCAA "B" cut time of 48.96 (altitude-adjusted) seconds to lead the country by 1.50 seconds over teammate Lane Austin.  He then turned in a time of 50.92 (altitude-adjusted) seconds in the 100 IM, a non-championship event before coming back on Saturday to place third in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.73 (adjusted) to rank third in Division II thus far this year.  Sampson also turned in a 50 back relay split of 22.47 in the 200 medley relay to lead the country in that individual discipline by more than a second.

The Mavericks are off until Oct. 22-23 when they host the CMU Duals against Augustana, Colorado School of Mines and Western Colorado's women in the El Pomar Natatorium.
