Mercado Brings in Talented Women's Wrestling Class

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa women's wrestling coach Travis Mercado announced his complete 2020 recruiting class on Tuesday (Sept. 1) afternoon. The class consists of 18 girls with 10 girls ranked inside the overall top-100 by The Open Mat with six ranked by USA Wrestling's High School weight-by-weight rankings.

"This recruiting class is another statement to the commitment we have had in recruiting and building a premier program for women's wrestling here at Colorado Mesa University and the Western part of the United States," Coach Mercado said. "We have 10 of the Top 100 seniors ranked by The Open Mat coming in this year. All of the incoming girls bring a unique skill set, are eager to be a part of our program, and excited to help us in our quest of winning a national championship."

The group will join one of the top recruits in the country in Tristan Kelly from Erie, Colo. who was announced earlier this summer.

Hailey Ward is a 101-pounder from Turlock, Calif. Ward was a four-time state placer in California and a two-time Cadet Folkstyle All-American. She was also a Cadet Fargo All-American and ranked No. 70 in The Open Mat class of 2020 rankings.

"Hailey is a well-known name in California as she was a 4-time state placer in California. Her skill set is going to help strengthen our lower weights. Coming from an all-boys team in high school, she is looking forward to being on a women's team with girls who all have high expectations of themselves and have similar goals," Mercado said.

Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Miller come to Colorado Mesa from the Show Me State. She is a two-time Missouri State champion and ranked No. 13 at 117 pounds by USA Wrestling's high school rankings and No. 81 by The Open Mat.

"Lizzie is a two-time state champion from Missouri. She is energetic, highly motivated to succeed, and a great teammate. Her attacks are aggressive and calculated which makes her dangerous in all positions. I'm excited to see how being in a competitive environment helps her develop more in freestyle."

Holly Beaudoin is one of four wrestlers coming to Colorado Mesa from the great state of Washington. She won the Washington State Championship as a senior and was a four-time state placer. She placed twice at the USMC Fargo Nationals and was ranked No. 5 at 112 pounds by USA Wrestling and No. 32 by The Open Mat.

"Holly has been one of the best in Washington during her high school career. She is truly a competitor; she has the desire to improve and her "growth mindset" is what sets her apart from many others in the country. I'm excited to have her as part of the program as I know she is going to make an impact immediately for us."

Nanen Aguilar is one of four in-state Colorado products on the Mavericks roster. Aguilar is a two-time Colorado State placer and earned All-American status at Folkstyle Nationals. She is ranked No. 46 by The Open Mat class of 2020 rankings.

"Nanen, a Colorado native, has seen success both at the state and national level. She may be one of the most mentally tough athletes I've recruited. Another girl who will add depth and a competitive edge to our team and training environment," Mercado said about the in-state product.

Zoe Gress made the trek across the country from Hoosick Falls, N.Y. to join the Mavericks. Gress was a Women's National All-American and placed fourth at the Lady Klippan Open Cadet Tournament, an international tournament. She is ranked No. 90 in the class of 2020 by The Open Mat.

"Zoe came highly recommended from Coach Joe Uccellini from Curby Wrestling Club in New York. Zoe has a wide variety of attacks especially in throws and upper body attacks. She is a young lady that is highly motivated to be successful in both the classroom and the mat," Mercado said of his New York product.

Kenzie Cormier is another product from Washington and enters the roster at 143 pounds. Cormier is a 2020 Washington State champion and became a four-time state placer this year. She is a two-time Cadet Fargo placer and placed fifth at Cadet World Team Trials. She is ranked No. 17 at 138 pounds by USA Wrestling and No.78 by The Open Mat.

"Kenzie another premier Washington athlete. She has had success throughout her career not only in her state but nationally as well. She will come in and make a tremendous impact in our middle/upper weight classes as a teammate and competitor."

Isabeau Shalack is from Evergreen Park, Ill. and will enter as the lone 191-pounder on the roster. Shalack is a two-time Folkstyle National All-American, a two-time Illinois girls Freestyle Champion, and a two-time finalist at Fargo as a Cadet and a Junior. She is the No. 1 ranked wrestler at 225 pounds by USA Wrestling and the No. 42 recruit by The Open Mat.

"Isabeau is a standout from Illinois. She brings two national championship finals appearances to Colorado Mesa University. Isabeau has high expectations of herself and is eager to capture that allusive national championship. She is bringing much needed talent to our upper weight classes."

Colorado Mesa is still awaiting word on winter sports schedules. Women's wrestling is in its third year at Colorado Mesa and will be entering their first season as an emerging sport by the NCAA.

"I cannot wait to get us all on the mat and start training as we are ready to make jumps towards our goals as a team and as individuals."
