WICHITA FALLS, Texas— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team claimed a thrilling 4-3 NCAA Division II South Central Regional afternoon win over the region's ninth-ranked Cameron Aggies here at the Weeks Park Tennis Center to salvage a Friday split during action at the MSU-Texas Tennis Invitational.
The victory came after the Mavericks were downed 7-0 by the nation's 15
th-ranked and host Mustangs in the morning at MSU-Texas' on-campus courts.
CMU is now 8-7 on the year heading into a Saturday morning encounter with No. 19 Southwest Baptist in their final match of the weekend.
Against the Aggies, who fell to 0-5, the Mavericks claimed two of the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead and then battled for singles wins in the second, third and fifth flights. They clinched the victory in the final match when
Maike Waldburger closed out a 7-5, 6-4 win over Julianne Garcia.
Laura Alsing, who won both her singles and doubles match, was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Alex Lopez at No. 2 while
Rebecca Osterberg claimed a 6-0, 6-3 win over Melany Opolz in the No. 3 affair.
In doubles, the Mavericks switched their top two doubles teams as Alsing and
Kristen Kirby moved down to the No. 2 spot to claim a 6-2 win over Vasilsa Polunova and Opolz.
Carolena Campos and
Halle Romero then won their fourth out of the last five at No. 3 as they clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Pilar Jaurena and Garcia.
Against MSU-Texas, ranked third in the region, the Mavericks were not able to win a match although Kirby, who dropped a 3-setter to Polunova later in the day, took Lea Cizeron to a tie-breaker before going down 7-6 (7-1). Cizeron is ranked 19
th in the region.
