WICHITA FALLS, Texas— The nation's 19
th-ranked Southwest Baptist University Bearcats overpowered Colorado Mesa University, 5-0 in the Mavericks' weekend finale here at the MSU-Texas Tennis Invitational.
SBU (5-1), ranked second in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region, had three regionally-ranked singles players in the lineup, including national No. 30 Jill Van den Dungen, who came from behind to defeat CMU senior
Kristen Kirby, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) in the top flight. The Bearcats also won matches in the second, third and fourth flights as the Mavericks managed to win just five games.
The No. 5 and 6 singles matches went unfinished after Bearcat players won 6-4 in each set.
They also swept the doubles matches as the fifth-ranked duo of Van den Dungen and Catarina Zheng won 6-3 over Kirby and
Laura Alsing in the top flight. CMU's No. 3 pairing of
Carolena Campos and
Halle Romero fared the best, but went down 7-5 in a tight match against Diana Cabrera and Sarah Brown.
The Mavericks went 1-3 on the weekend and are now 8-8 this season. All three losses came to nationally-ranked foes.
They continue their season next Saturday against another nationally-ranked opponent in No. 13 Azusa Pacific as they begin a 4-day tour through southern California.
