JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks improved to 2-0 on the short season after defeating Saint Leo (0-1) 16-8 Saturday afternoon at Selman Field.
The Mavericks were dominate in face offs winning 25 of the 28. Cole Emmanuel was responsible for 24-of the team's 25 while Colin Seedorf won his only face off. Emmanuel, a freshman from Denver, Colo., recorded 19 ground balls along with one goal on just two shots.
Remi Reeves recorded his first start of the season and recorded ten saves earning the win in the net.
Johnny Cary led the way with four points that included a team high three goals and one assists. Cary and Joe Wulforst IV recorded nine shots each to tie for a team high.
The Mavericks outhustled the Lions grabbing 50 ground balls to their 25 and causing 10 turnovers to their six.
The Mavericks gave up the first goal of the game to the Lions before scoring the next four consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead entering the second quarter. The Mavericks outscored the Lions 4-3 during the second quarter to hold an 8-4 advantage at the break.
The Mavericks were outscored 3-2 during the third quarter, but proved a dominating fourth quarter limiting the Lions to just one goal while scoring six.
With 10:16 remaining the in the game Jed Brummett recorded the only man up goal of the game with an assist from James Booth to take a 13-7 lead. The Mavericks allowed one more goal before scoring the final three goals of the game to reach a 16-8 lead.
The Mavericks suffered three penalties during today's game but the Lions did not convert on any.

The Mavericks will wrap up their trip with a game against Shorter University on Monday (Feb 10) at Ben Brady Field in Rome, Ga. at noon.
