Jacksonville, Fla. – The Colorado Mesa men's lacrosse team (1-0) opened up the 2020 season with a dominating 19-6 win over Embry-Riddle (0-1) Thursday afternoon on the D.B. Milne Field. This win marks the fourth consecutive year the Mavericks have opened up their season with a victory.
James Booth led the way for the Mavs with six points that included three goals and a team high three assists. Senior Johnny Cary followed with three goals and two assists to reach five points.
Jed Brummett led the team with a game high four goals and recorded three of his four goals in the third quarter.
As the Mavericks main faceoff guys Cole Emmanuel went 10-of-21 while Colin Seedorf was 4-of-6. These two went against Embry-Riddle's Mark Urso who was 13-of-27 in faceoffs.
The Mavericks were even with the Eagles after the first half, 4-4, and it was not until the second half that the Mavericks took over outscoring the Eagles 15-2.
The Mavs opened up the third quarter scoring four consecutive goals before ERAU interrupted the run with a goal to make the score 8-5 at the 10:31 mark of the third quarter. Following that goal the Mavericks recorded the next eight consecutive goals which lasted until the 9:54 mark of the fourth quarter when Jared Kane of ERAU recorded a man-up goal to stop the run. By that time the Mavericks extended their lead 16-6 and closed the game with three goals each recorded by Carson Schwark.
In the net Christian Cherry recorded the win after starting the game and making seven saves. Remi Reeves served 12:51 in the net and recorded one save.
The Mavericks outshot the Eagles 70-26 and were led by Cary who recorded 12 shots. The Maverick out hustled the Eagles 36-23 on ground balls and were led by freshman Jake Eickleman who picked up five ground balls and caused one turnover. Of the Eagles 28 turnovers the Mavericks were responsible for 13 of them while three players recorded one or more caused turnover. Deandre Ross led the defense with three caused turnovers which ties a career high for the senior from Danville, Calif.

The Mavericks will continue their road trip against Saint Leo University on Feb 8 at noon. The game will take place at Providence School which is a neutral site. The Mavs will wrap up their trip nn Monday at noon as they face Shorter University in Rome, Ga. at the Ben Brady Field.
