No. 17 Mavericks Host CSU-Pueblo and Adams to Begin RMAC Season

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After an undefeated start to the 2020 season the Colorado Mesa Men's Lacrosse team will open up the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season this weekend at Walker Field against Adams State and CSU-Pueblo on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Friday's game will begin at 6 pm against Adams State and Sunday's game will begin at noon against CSU-Pueblo.

All About the Mavs

17 different Mavericks have recorded goals in the first three games of the season to reach 52 goals this season for the Mavs. As a defensive unit the Mavericks have limited opponents to just 17 goals this season and 81 shots.

The Maverick offense has recorded 185 shots over three games with a 28.1 shots percentage and 57.3 shots on goal percentage. The Mavericks have recorded four man up goals this season and have only surrendered one to opponents.

The Mavs have won 57 faceoffs and only loss 21 for a 73.1 faceoff percentage.

Freshman Cole Emmanuel has recorded the most face offs this season winning 35-of-49 while Colin Seedorf leads the team in face off percentage at 75.9 percent (22-of-29).

Graduate transfer James Booth who has played in all three games this season while recording two starts leads the team in points (17) and has recorded six goals and 11 assists which are both team highs. Carson Schwark and Kegan Hufford each have six goals on the season to tie Booth for a team high.

Emmanuell and Seedorf both lead the team with 21 ground balls while Brian Buckner and Deandre Ross have recorded a team high five caused turnovers.

Players of the Week

Of the four players of the week honors this season, given out by the RMAC, the Mavericks have swept each honor. In week one Johnny Cary was named RMAC Offensive Player of the Week and freshman Emmanuel was named Defensive Player of the Week for the games against Embry-Riddle and Saint Leo.

The following week Booth was named Offensive Player of the Week and Seedorf was named Defensive Player of the Week for their efforts against Shorter University. In that game Booth recorded a career high seven points which included five assists and two goals. Seedorf won 17 of his 22 face offs to earn Defensive Player of the Week.

National Ranking

In the first United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Coaches Preseason Poll which was release on Jan 28 the Mavericks were picked No. 20, but have since improved to No. 17 in week one which reflects games played through Feb 16.

The Adams State Grizzlies are receiving votes in this week's USILA Coaches Poll along with Westminster.

Scouting CSU-Pueblo

The ThunderWolves were tabbed 3rd in the RMAC Preseason Poll after completing a 7-8 overall record and 2-4 conference record a season ago.

The ThunderWolves will open their season tomorrow against Westminster before facing Colorado Mesa on Sunday at Walker Field.

The Mavericks are 12-0 against the ThunderWolves and average 20.83 goals against them.

CSU-Pueblo returns three All-RMAC performers from the 2019 season which includes Jacob Muir who won 57.3 percent of his face offs last season and Tommy Vassallo who scored 30 goals last season. Tavian Watson recorded 26 ground balls last season.

Scouting Adams State

The Grizzlies will open up their season against the Mavs this Friday.

Last season the Grizzlies finished the year 3-10 overall and 0-6 in conference play. The Mavericks swept the Grizzlies last season defeating them 17-5 in the first matchup and 10-4 in the second game.

The Mavericks are 20-0 all-time against the Grizzlies and average 12.05 goals against them.

The Grizzlies were picked to finish last in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' poll.
