No. 14 Mavs Travel to Minnesota for Midwest Region Matchup

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -  The Colorado Mesa Maverick women's lacrosse team (0-1) will travel to St. Paul, Minnesota this weekend for a game against Concordia St. Paul on Feb 21 at noon (MT). This contest features two teams from the Midwest Region and will take place in the Concordia Dome. Live stats and live stream will be provided by Concordia St. Paul and can be found in the links above.

The Mavericks were originally scheduled to play Upper Iowa University on this trip, but that game has been cancelled.

About the Mavs

The Mavericks recently played No. 9 Lindenwood in their season opener two weeks ago in Las Vegas, Nevada where they fell 19-7. In that game Colorado Mesa scored four of the final six goals of the game and were led by Ashton Whittle who recorded three goals. Freshman Regan Wentz made a solid debut finishing with a goal, two ground balls, and three caused turnovers.

In the Lindenwood game Lula Mitchell was awarded the start at goalkeeper and clocked 56 minutes in the net recording 11 saves. Cami Huff subbed in for the final four minutes and recorded one save on two shots faced.

The Mavericks are coached by Shanta Loecker who led the Mavericks to a historic season last year that saw them go 15-4 and record the program's first ever NCAA appearance and tournament win. The 15 wins last season marked two more wins than any other CMU squad had done before.

Preseason Coaches' Poll

The year's roster earned a second-seed in RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll prediction.

Kenzie Blackwell and Raquel Ruhme were selected as RMAC Preseason Players to Watch which replaces the Preseason All-RMAC list. Both players are coming off All-RMAC seasons as each earned All-RMAC Honorable Mention last year.

In the first game of the season Blackwell recorded one goal and took four shots, putting two on frame. The Granite Bay, California native added one ground ball.

Ruhme, a Prior Lake, Minn. native, recorded a start and caused one turnover against Lindenwood.

National Rankings

The Mavericks began the season ranked No. 14 in the IWLCA Preseason Poll after finishing last season ranked No. 10.

The first weekly IWLCA Division II Coaches Poll of the 2020 season will be published on Feb 24.

Scouting Concordia St-Paul

The Bears enter the game with a 2-0 record after defeating UCCS and Rockhurst. This will be the first time in program history the two teams are playing each other.

Last season the Bears finished the year with a 11-7 overall record and a 7-4 conference record in the GLAIC.

This season, the Bears have recorded 31 goals in two games and are led by junior Sarah Pierson who has seven goals on the short season. The Bears defense has caused 33 turnovers this year and are led by Katie Loffsfeldt who has recorded seven.

As a team the Bears are averaging 35.5 shots per game and recording 78.9 percent of their shots on goal. Five of their goals have come from free position on 15 opportunities. The Bears are clearing 88.4 percent of their possessions (38-of-43).
