Griffins Snap Maverick’s 14-Game Win Streak

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah –In a matchup between two nationally ranked teams the No. 15 Westminster Griffins (16-3, 11-2 RMAC) snapped a 14-game win streak against the No. 22 Colorado Mesa Mavericks (16-3, 12-1 RMAC) Saturday night inside the Behnken Field House. 
 

The Mavericks remain in first place of the RMAC standings as this was their first loss of the conference season. They sit one game ahead of Westminster and two games ahead of Colorado Western. 
 

The Mavericks shot 31.0 percent (18-of-58) from the field, 38.5 percent (10-of-26) from beyond, and 100.0 percent from the free-throw line, but only attempted five free throws. Kelsey Siemons and Kylyn Rigsby recorded a combined seven of the Mavericks' ten three-pointers and for the second time this season Siemons was perfect from the three-point line going 4-of-4 while Rigsby was 3-of-12.
 

Sydni Brandon recorded five steals, five assists, five rebounds, and added seven points to tonight's contest.  
 

For just the second time this season the Mavericks allowed an opponent to shoot over 40.0 percent as the Griffins shot 48.6 percent (17-of-35) from the field. From the free throw line the Griffins were 17-of-18 and made 11 in the final quarter. Mariah Martin recorded a game high 18 points and was responsible for six of the team's free throws. 
 

Westminster held a 12-11 lead at the end of the first quarter before the Mavericks battled back to outscore the Griffins 15-6 in the second quarter and hold a 26-18 lead at the break. The Mavericks extended their lead 42-24 with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter to give themselves the largest lead of the game. They then gave up ten points in the last three minutes and recorded only two points, but held a 44-34 advantage entering the final quarter. The Griffins scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and held the Mavericks to just seven while going 11-of-12 from the free-throw line to upset the Mavs, 55-51.
 

This was the Mavericks first loss since Nov 23 against Northwest Nazarene University. These two teams will square of one more time this season in the friendly confines of Brownson Arena on Feb 7 at 5:30 pm.
