Wrestlers go 1-3 at Tracy Borah Duals

Metzgar, Lovell, Krone all win three

GUNNISON, Colo.— Collin Metzgar, Bracken Lovell and Nolan Krone each won three matches as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks went 1-3 as a team at the Tracy Borah Duals, hosted by Western Colorado University on Saturday here in the Mountaineer Field House.

The Mavericks, now 3-3 in duals this season, used big bonus points to claim a 30-22 win over Fort Hays State in the opener before they were downed by Indianapolis (31-15), UNC Pembroke (27-17) and Findlay (33-18) throughout the rest of the day.

CMU had to forfeit two matches in each of the last two duals due to injuries, which proved to be too big of a mountain to climb.

In the morning dual with the Tigers, the teams split the matches evenly.  However, the Mavericks won all five of theirs by pin to take the dual.  They never trailed as Metzgar, who was a perfect 3-0 on the day, and Lovell, needed just a combined four minutes and 31 seconds to give the Mavericks a 12-0 lead.

The Tigers, who fell to 1-1 before ending the day at 2-2, would pull within 12-10 before Payton Tawater, ranked third in the country at 157 pounds, pinned Tristan Prosch at the 3:42 mark.  Hayden Harris then won in just 1:22 as the Mavericks surged to a 24-10 lead en-route to the victory, the Mavs' third straight at the time.

Aaron Trygstad then secured the win with a 1-minute pin of Tyler Boone at 197 pounds.

Against Indianapolis, 3-3 after the win and 4-4 at the end of the day, Metzgar won by a 10-4 score before the Greyhounds rallied for the next six wins.  Krone, who was 3-1 on the day, then won by forfeit at 184 pounds before Hunter Mooring claimed  a 4-3 victory at 285 to close the dual.

Against UNC Pembroke, which is now 8-8, Cian Apple got the start at 125 pounds and made the most of the call to score a 12-10 win.  The Mavericks then doubled their lead to 6-0 as Lovell won, 4-0.  However, the Braves won the next four matches, including two by forfeit, to take control and a 21-6 lead.

Seth Latham and Mooring then won by major decision while Krone also picked up a win at 184.

The Mavericks also got out to a strong 9-0 lead against Findlay as Metzgar won 3-2 before Lovell won by forfeit.  Kyle Kintz, the winner of Friday's Western Colorado Open, was then defeated by tenth-ranked Branson Proudlock at 141, triggering a 21-point run by the Oilers.

Latham and Krone, who pinned Daniel Rosales, then won for the Mavericks who did take four of the ten matches in the finale.

CMU will be on the road again next Saturday as they head east to Hartsville, South Carolina, for the Coker Duals, where they will face Lander and the host Cobras.
