LAST TIME OUT
Colorado Mesa used another big second inning and held on late for a 6-5 win over Central Missouri to advance to the NCAA National Semifinals. Andrew Morris earned the win while Will Dixon picked up his 16th save of the season. Spencer Bramwell led the offense with two hits, both going for doubles. Game one starter Trevin Reynolds chipped in on the offensive end with a hit and a run batted in.Â
BALANCED ATTACK
The Colorado Mesa offensive attack got production from everyone in the lineup in the win over Central Missouri. All nine players that started the game finished with at leaast one hit with five different players earning one RBI a piece. Dominic DeMarco, Spencer Bramwell and Caleb Farmer were the lone players to have more than one hit in the game.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
Freshman Andrew Morris took the ball in game two of the NCAA National Championships and didn't disappoint. Morris allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out one in five and a third innings of work. He earned his sixth win of the season in just 71 pitches.Â
MILESTONE
Senior closer Will Dixon pitched the final two and a third innings of the Mavericks in the win over Central Missouri on Monday night. Dixon allowed just one hit and struck out four to pick up the save. It was his 16th save of the season, tying him for the single season mark with Keith Nelson who saved 16 games during the 2007 season. Dixon is 2-0 with a 0.66 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP. He has 52 strikeouts with only 22 hits allowed in 41 innings pitched.
WHOSE GOT THE BALL
Senior JR McDermott will likely get the ball in game three of the tournament. The 2016 All-American has been plagued with arm injuries the past two seasons and has been used sparingly over the last seven weeks of the season but is ready to go tomorrow. The Aurora native is 8-0 this season with a 2.56 ERA in 59 and two-thirds innings pitched. His last start came on April 5 where he went four innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits walked one and didnt strike anyone out.
ON A ROLL
Colorado Mesa has been peaking at the right time. The Mavericks have won 13 of their past 14 games, dropping just game two of the NCAA Super Regional against Angelo State in that span. During that time, the Mavericks swept through the RMAC Tournament and the NCAA Regional tournament and are outscoring their opponents by just under three runs per game.
THE STREAK OF 40
The Mavericks finished last season with a 43-16 overall record making it six straight seasons that Colorado Mesa has won 40 or more games. With their win over Dixie State on Friday evening, the Mavericks made it seven straight seasons of 40 wins. The high mark during the streak came in the 2017 season where the team won 50 games and reached the NCAA Championship Final Four that included a win over No. 1 ranked Delta State.Â
NATIONAL RANKINGS
Colorado Mesa remained in the No. 1 slot in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper rankings and at No. 2 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association rankings after they werent updated following the regional rounds. The only rankings that were updated came from Perfect Game who had the Mavericks slotted at No. 2 behind North Greenville. North Greenville failed to make the trip to Cary as they were defeated by Catawba in the Southeast Super Regional.
THE SKIPPER
Head coach Chris Hanks enters his 21st season guiding the Mavericks and has an impressive 883-354 record, the most wins from a coach in program history. The Carbondale, Colo. native won his 850th game as the Maverick skipper on March 16, 2019 in an 11-0 win over No. 9 Colorado School of Mines. He has led Colorado Mesa to three region championships, a feat that has earned him ABCA Region Coach of the year three times now. This season he was named the RMAC Coach of the Year for the 11th time in his tenure.Â
