Mavs Set for RMAC Tournament

No. 2 seeded Mavs will play No.3 seeded CSU-Pueblo Friday at 2 pm

The Colorado Mesa Mavericks will begin the 2019 RMAC Tournament this Friday in Salt Lake City. The Mavs are seeking their fourth consecutive RMAC Tournament Championship as they have been crowned champions the past three years. For the first time they will travel to another school for the tournament. This year Westminster claimed the regular season championship and held rights to hosting the tournament.

The Tournament is made up of four teams and will be over the course of two days. Semifinal games will take place Friday at 2 pm and 5 pm. The Mavericks and CSU-Pueblo will face off in the first semifinal game and the Westminster Griffins and Adams State will faceoff in the second semifinal game. The winner of each game will advance to the Championship match on Saturday at 2pm. All games will be played on Dumke Field.

In his career Griffin currently sits with 176 points which is second in school history behind Steve Brandenburg who finished his career with 181 points.

Michael Marino is one ground ball away from tying his own single season school record. Last season he recorded 127 and he currently sits at 126 entering the RMAC Tournament. As the Mavs number one faceoff guy he has a 62.3 faceoff percentage (228-of-366).

There are seven different Mavericks who have recorded ten or more caused turnovers this year and seven different Mavs who have picked up 20 or more ground balls this year.

All-RMAC Honors

Announced yesterday by conference officials senior Jack Griffin was named the 2019 RMAC Midfielder of the Year for the third consecutive time in his career and Freshman Chase Overton earned the RMAC Co-Freshman of the Year.

Overton is the first freshman in program history to earn RMAC Freshman of the Year. Among RMAC players he ranks ninth in the conference averaging 1.07 caused turnovers a game and tenth in ground balls averaging 2.47 a game.

Griffin is the only player in program history to earn a player of the year award three consecutive times. Multiple players have earned back-to-back awards but no one other than Griffin has earned it three different or consecutive years.

Griffin is also the only player in RMAC men's lacrosse history to earn a player of the year award three times.
