PUEBLO, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Men's Tennis team came up on the short end of a hard-fought decision as they fell 4-3 to in-state rival CSU-Pueblo, Saturday morning here at Pueblo East High School.
The Mavericks, 3-14 on the season, received singles wins from
Max Lindqvist,
Alain De La Bastide and
Lucas Martin after De La Bastide and Martin had won their No. 1 doubles match, but never could overcome the ThunderWolves, who improved to 3-13 with the back-and-forth team victory.
The ThunderWolves won the doubles point thanks to victories in the second and third flights before De La Bastide evened the score with a 6-2, 6-2 win over James Ryan in the No. 4 singles match.
Meanwhile, Lindqvist would go on to knot the team score at 2 with his No. 1 singles win (7-5, 4-6, 6-2) over Daniel Garcia as he snapped a 13-match slide. However, the ThunderWolves would again take a 3-2 lead with a 3-set win at No. 2 singles before Martin knocked off Richard Garcia (7-6 (7-2), 6-2) at No. 5 singles.
Dante Alcala then wrapped up CSU-Pueblo's win with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles.
Earlier, De La Bastide and Martin had defeated Ogulcan Deniz and Daniel Garcia by a 6-3 score.
The Mavericks will be on the road next week playing at Division I Northern Colorado on Thursday and at Colorado College on Friday. They will then square off with the ThunderWolves once again on Apr. 19 in Grand Junction.
