Mavericks Celebrate Seniors this Saturday against Westminster

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Mavericks (7-6, 2-1) will be celebrating their 11 seniors this Saturday as they take on Westminster at 2 pm.  Begining at 1:40 pm Colorado Mesa will take time to honor the 11 seniors in congratulating them on their Maverick careers.

This year's senior class includes Jack Griffin, Remi Reeves, Nate Scully, Brandon Wilson, Michael Dasch Jr., Beau Lansdown, Cooper Tokar, Ryder Clark, Michael Marino, Cole Smith, and Austin Bullock.

This senior class has been a part of three consecutive RMAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships.

In the four team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings the Mavericks are currently second with a 2-1 conference record. They sit behind Westminster who is a perfect 3-0 and in front of CSU-Pueblo (6-4, 1-2) and Adams State (3-6, 0-4).

Senior Jack Griffin is averaging 2.77 goals per game which is third best in the conference and his 1.31 assists per game ranks him fourth best in the RMAC. The 4.08 points per game he is producing is fourth best in the conference. He leads the conference with 8.62 shots per game.

Brandon Wilson is averaging 1.62 goals per game (eighth best in the RMAC) and 1.08 assists per game (seventh best in the RMAC).

Griffin and Wilson each lead the Maverick team with 53 and 35 points, respectively.

Six different Mavericks have recorded multiple man-up goals while Griffin is the only Mav to register a man-down goal this season.

Senior Cole Smith has caused 17 turnovers which leads the team and has grabbed 15 ground balls. His 1.42 caused turnovers per game is second best among RMAC players.

Michael Marino has attempted the most faceoffs this season than any another RMAC player and has a 59.8 winning percentage (174-of-291)

Player of the Week

This last Monday, Michael Marino and Brandon Wilson were each named RMAC Player of the Week for their respected positions. Marino was named Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and Wilson was named Offensive Player of the Week for the first this season.

This is the third time this year that the Mavericks have swept RMAC Player of the Week awards.

To earn the honor, Marino won 94 percent of his faceoffs (63-of-67) and totaled 41 ground balls over the Mavericks three games. The senior from California currently sits at exactly 100 ground balls on the season.

Wilson recorded 11 goals and five assists over the Mavericks three wins and recorded a career-high five goals against CSU-Pueblo. He totaled five assists over the week and recorded his second man-up goal of the season against Adams State.

Scouting Westminster

The Griffins are currently on a three-game win streak which started with a game against the Mavericks on April 6 when the Griffins won 14-8. Since then Westminster has defeated Adams State (12-6) and CSU-Pueblo (15-11).

The Griffins are led by Nick Marcy who has 54 points this season (21 goals, 33 assists). He has a 31.8 shot percentage and a 72.7 shots on goal percentage. His 24 ground balls is fifth best on the Griffin team. His 4.50 points per game is second best in the conference. Marcy is averaging 2.75 assists per game which is currently second best in the nation among all Division II men's lacrosse players.

Mitchell Senour is the Griffins leading defender as he has totaled 63 ground balls and caused two turnovers. Chase Flinders leads the team with 18 caused turnovers.

All time the Mavericks have defeated Westminster nine times and only lost to them twice which includes the loss suffered earlier this season.

Up Next

The Mavericks will close out the RMAC season on the road against Adams State and CSU-Pueblo. They will face Adams State on April 26 at 3 pm and CSU-Pueblo on April 28 at noon.
