DENVER, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Regis Rangers on Saturday to open up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Mavericks improved their record to 14-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play while the Rangers fell to 5-10 and 0-2 in the RMAC.
In game one, sophomore second baseman
Chase Hamilton enjoyed his best game as a Maverick going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three runs driven in during a 10-6 win for Colorado Mesa in game one of the series in the conference opener for both teams.
The Mavericks scored 10 runs on 16 hits with five of those going for doubles.
Colorado Mesa struck for two runs in the second inning on a RBI double by Hamilton and a RBI single by freshman
Tanner Garner to make it 2-0. They tacked on four more runs in the third, two on another double by Hamilton to make it 6-0. Garner finished the game with three hits.
Spencer Bramwell's sacrifice fly that scored
Jordan Stubbings made it 7-1 through four complete innings.
Colorado Mesa scored three runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by
Josh Shapiro making it 10-3. Shapiro finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three runs driven in.
The Rangers cut into the Mavericks lead in the ninth inning on a three-run home run by Coby Zimmerman.
Senior
JR McDermott pitched six and two-thirds innings and allowed three runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out seven to earn the win. McDermott (3-0) threw 103 pitches before giving way to his bullpen that allowed three runs on three hits, walked four and struck out four.
In the night cap,
Garrett Hutson fired a complete game and benefitted from a big second inning to give Colorado Mesa the 7-3 win and the Saturday doubleheader sweep.
Hutson allowed three runs on six hits, walked one and struck out four to earn the win on the mound. Hutson (2-0) gave up two runs on three hits in the first and then settled in scattering three hits in the final six innings of action.
The Mavericks scored five runs in the second inning with the big blow coming off the bat of shortstop
Caleb Farmer. The sophomore belted a three-run double to right center, clearing the bases and giving the Mavericks the 5-2 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
Freshman
Haydn McGeary hammered a 2-2 pitch over the fence in left center for his second home run of the season, pushing the Mavericks lead to 6-2. McGeary finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three runs scored.
The two teams will complete the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11am from Regis Baseball Field.
