Mavs downed by No. 14 Midwestern State, Cameron (RV) by identical 6-1 scores

WICHITA FALLS, Texas— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team picked up singles wins from Taylor Hershey and Maike Waldburger but came up on the short end of some tight matches as they fell by identical 6-1 team scores to No. 14 Midwestern State and Cameron in NCAA Division II South Central Region action on Friday.

In the morning match against the Mustangs, the Mavericks received a 6-4, 0-6, 1-0 (10-6) win from Hershey over Emilija Segetlija at No. 5 singles.

In doubles, the Mavs dropped to 7-2 tiebreakers in the first and third flights before reigning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week Kristen Kirby had her chances at No. 1 singles, eventually succumbing to Bianca Duff in a pair of 7-5 sets.

Against Cameron, receiving votes in the Oracle/ITA NCAA Division II National Rankings, Waldburger won her No. 6 singles match, 6-1, 7-5 over Pilar Jaurena.  Kirby also won the second set over the nation's 32nd ranked Sarah Frendo, 6-2 but dropped all 10 points of an extended tiebreaker that decided the No. 1 singles match.

The Mavericks, now 3-8 on the year, will wrap up their weekend in the Lone Star state with a Saturday morning match against Angelo State.
