No. 12 Mavs Resume RMAC Play Against UCCS, CSU-Pueblo

The Colorado Mesa Maverick women's lacrosse team is hitting the road for their first RMAC road games of the season. The No. 12 Mavs are 8-1 on their season and 2-1 in conference play. The Mavericks will travel to Colorado Springs to play UCCS on Friday March 29th at 5 pm and then travel further south to CSU- Pueblo on March 31st for a game at Rawlings Field that will take place at 1 pm.

A Look at the Mavs

After starting the season with seven home games the Mavericks are currently in the middle of a six game road stretch, so far they are 3-0 away from Walker Field after defeating three Ohio schools last week including an overtime win against University of Findlay.

The Mavs are currently on a five game winning streak and with two more wins this weekend the Mavericks will break a program record for consecutive wins. The record was previously set at six games during the 2017 season.

So far this season there have been multiple single season records broken. Paige Elliott has already smashed the single-season assists record with at least six more games remaining. She's totaled 42 this season and the next best Maverick was at 30. Her 42 assists leads the nation among Division II women's lacrosse players.

With one more ground ball Olivia Hayden will take over as Colorado Mesa's single season leader. She is currently tied with former Maverick Lauren Wells at 46. With her three caused turnovers last game Hayden took over her previous single season record set last year and is tied with Erin Koehler for 35 caused turnovers. Hayden needs one more to record the 100th caused turnover of her career.

The Mavericks rank fourth in the nation in caused turnovers per game at 14.78 per game.

National Ranking

The Mavericks improved to No. 12 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association national poll. They are tied at No. 12 with UIndy while the Regis Rangers rank 7th and Lindenwood checks in at 6th.

In the media poll the Mavericks rank No. 11.

Both polls can be viewed in the links above.

Scouting UCCS

The Mountain Lions are 3-5 on their season and 1-1 in the RMAC. Last week the Mountain Lions fell to nationally ranked New York Institute of Technology which was their fourth game against a ranked opponent this season. They are 0-4 when playing ranked opponents.

UCCS has recorded 106 goals this season and their shooting percentage is 43 percent.

The Mavericks are a perfect 2-0 against the Mountain Lions who just recently started a program back in 2017.

Angela Naughton leads the UCCS offensive with 21 goals and seven assist. Keira Lowe is their next best offensive player with 20 points (15 goals and five assist). Natalie Church will likely battle with Olivia Hayden on draw controls as she leads the Mountain Lions with 47 on the year and is averaging 5.88 per game.

The Mavericks will need to be cautious of Ellie O'Brien who has caused 23 turnovers this season and averages 2.88 per game.

Scouting CSU-Pueblo

The Maverick will face CSU-Pueblo for the second time this season on Sunday. Last time out the Thunderwolves got outscored 15-8 in the Mavericks season opener.

The Mavericks are now 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC. The Thunderwolves are coming off two straight losses to nationally-ranked opponents when they faced Colorado College (10-20) and Regis (9-16).

The Thunderwolves will face Adams State tonight in Pueblo at 6 pm.

Allison Wurscher leads the team with 26 points composed of 15 goals and 11 assists she has taken 27 shots on goals with an 87.1 shots on goal percentage.  Her teammate Christensen leads the team with 18 goals and is second with 20 points. She's the team leading draw controller with 33 total.
