No. 16 Mavs Host RMAC Opponents on Wednesday and Friday

Mav improve five places to No. 16 in IWLCA national poll

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After a 3-1 start to the season the Mavericks will wrap up their seven game home stand against two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes, Rockhurst and Oklahoma Baptist. The Mavericks opened up RMAC play with a loss to No. 4 Lindenwood and will look to get their first conference win of the season this week starting with Rockhurst on Wednesday March 13th at 4 pm followed by a game against Oklahoma Baptist on Friday March 15 at 4 pm.

The Mavericks have had a strong start to their season with multiple players contributing both offensively and defensively. Paige Elliott is leading the nation in assists per game at 5.00 and recently recorded a career-high eight against Lindenwood. She's totaled 20 this season which ranks her fourth among all Division II women's lacrosse players. On the defensive end Erin Koehler ranks first in the nation in caused turnovers per game and ground balls per game.  She averages 5.50 caused turnovers and picks up 6.50 ground balls per game. She has totaled 99 ground balls in her career and will likely achieve her 100th career ground ball this week.

The Maverick's goalie Lula Mitchell ranks second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in goals against average at 10.40.

National Ranking

After defeating the nationally ranked Grand Valley State Lakers the Mavs moved up five places in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association rankings to No. 16 as of today.

The 2019 Coaches Poll will include 25 teams and be released weekly during the regular season. The final regular season poll for the 2019 season will be published on May 6.

For the Division II Women's US Lacrosse Magazine the Mavericks stayed at No. 14.

Scouting Rockhurst

The Hawks of Kansas City will come to Walker Field on a three game winning streak and have scored 15 goals in each of their past three victories. They sit with a 4-4 overall record and opened up conference play with a win over Westminster, 15-3.

There are three players on their roster who have registered over 20 goals. Marianna Anderson and Logan Derosia led the team with 23 goals on the season. Anderson has totaled 28 draw controls and ten ground balls.

The Mavs defeated Rockhurst twice last year during the 2018 season. In their first meeting of the regular season they won 16-8 and later in the RMAC Tournament the Mavs won 14-11.

Scouting Oklahoma Baptist

The Bison of Shawnee, Oklahoma opened up RMAC play with a loss to UCCS by a score of 23-4. They currently sit with a 2-2 record and began their season with two straight wins before they fell twice. This two-game losing streak will come with them to Walker Field as they take on their first ranked opponent of the year Colorado Mesa at 4 pm on Friday at Walker Field.

Lauren McCormack leads the team with 14 goals and three assists. She has 46 draw controls on the year.

Next Up

The Mavs will take a break from RMAC play and travel to Ohio over spring break for three games in five days. They will start against Tiffin University on Monday March 18 followed by a game on the 20th against University of Findlay. The Mavericks will wrap up their trip with a game against Ursuline College that will take play March 22 at 1 pm.
