Olivia Hayden had a school-record 13 draw controls and scored six goals on Friday night.
Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Senior Olivia Hayden scored six goals and a had a career-high eight offensive points as one of four Colorado Mesa University Mavericks to record a hat-trick in a comfortable 23-6 non-conference women's lacrosse win over Westminster College on Friday evening here at Walker Field.

Hayden also recorded a school-record 13 draw controls, breaking her own mark of 12 set last year at Regis, and had two assists and five ground balls.

Meanwhile, freshman Ashton Whittle had four goals off the bench for her first career hat-trick while Kenzie Blackwell and Marissa Leonardi chipped in three goals apiece.  Blackwell also had three assists to equal Paige Elliott for the team-lead in that category.  Elliott also scored twice.

With nine total scorers throughout, the nation's 21st-ranked Mavericks scored six goals in the opening four minutes and 24 seconds of the game and used a 7-0 run to open an 8-1 lead just 13:02 into the contest while cruising to their second win in as many tries on the young season.  They led 13-3 at the half and scored the first six goals of the second half to lead by as many as 16.

The Griffins fell to 0-3.

Hayden's domination in the center enabled Mavs' high-octane offense which resulted in numerous transition goals.

CMU won 20 of the 30 draws overall and had a 38-16 advantage in total shots.  The Mavericks also forced 25 Griffin turnovers as Erin Koehler had six caused turnovers, just one shy of the Maverick record, and five ground balls to lead the Maverick defense.

Freshman net-minder Cami Huff also made her collegiate debut and tallied nine saves to earn the win.

Kiley Barber, who netted two goals, Amanda Barton, Amanda Geary and Mary Koch also scored goals for CMU.

Madie Ingman led the Griffins with two goals.

The Mavericks are now 10-1 all-time against the Griffins and have won eight straight games against them.

Both teams will remain in the Grand Valley to face Grand Valley State University out of Allendale, Michigan.  The Griffins will play the nation's 16th-ranked Lakers on Sunday at noon in a neutral-field encounter while the Mavericks will face them for the first time in school-history on Tuesday as part of their 6-game home stand to open the season, the first under Head Coach Shanta Loecker.
