TUCSON, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University softball team wasted little time in getting back to winning ways as they blasted 14 hits, including two homers, in a 12-0, 5-inning win over Texas-Permian Basin in both teams' final game at the Cactus Classic here at Lincoln Park.
The Mavericks, who improved to 7-3 overall while completing a winning 3-2 weekend after dropping a pair of 1-run heartbreakers on Saturday, also received a fine 1-hit shutout effort from freshman
Shea Mauser, who picked up her first win as a Mav with ease. Mauser struck out five Falcons and allowed just four base runners, none of whom made it past second base.
Meanwhile, she had plenty of run support as the Mavericks scored the opening run on a 2-out first-inning homer by
AnnMarie Torres before exploding for a 5-spot in the third and a 6-pack of runs in the bottom of the fourth.
In the third inning, the first Mavericks to bat all recorded hits as they batted around.
Brooke Doumer and
Kellie Mrofcza each had doubles to begin the inning before a Torres RBI single drove in Mrofcza to increase the lead to 3-0.
Kaila Jacobi and
Tayah Gerber then hit singles to load the bases before an
Alexandria Dufour RBI groundout plated Torres.
Sarah Staudle then delivered a 2-run single just two plays later to complete the barrage.
The Mavericks were just as deadly in the fourth as each of the first seven batters reached safely. Doumer led off with a walk, innocently enough, but made the Falcons pay as she stole second before scoring on an Mrofcza single. Torres, who went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, then singled before Jacobi matches Torres and Doumer for the team home run lead at 3, hitting a 3-run shot that made it a 9-0 game.
Gerber then scored on a Dufour single before freshman
Nicole Christensen recorded her first career hit to continue the momentum as the Mavs scored their final run on a RBI ground out by pinch hitter
Alexa Samuels.
Meanwhile, Mauser recorded four strikeouts while retiring seven of the first eight Falcons she faced getting out of a miniature 1-out jam created by a walk and hit batsman with her fifth strikeout and a come-back ground.
After CMU's first big inning, she then set the Flacons down in order in the top of the fourth and retired eight of her final nine opponents.
The Mavericks will next play at Fort Lewis, which also played at the Cactus Classic, to begin Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Doubleheaders are slated for noon on Saturday (Feb. 23) and at 11 a.m. next Sunday (Feb. 24).
