No. 19 Mavs Travel to Front Range for Final Road Games

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa women's hoops program (19-2, 16-1 RMAC) will be traveling to the Denver area for games against Colorado Christian and Regis University on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The games Friday night against Colorado Christian will take place at 5:00 pm in Lakewood Colo. at the Event Center. The Mavericks will have a quick turnaround the following day and face Regis University on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm in Denver, Colo. at the Field House.  

Colorado Mesa defeated Regis (56-46) and Colorado Christian (57-42) earlier in the season in Brownson Arena.

Last weekend the Mavericks seventeen game winning streak was snapped by Westminster in a 57-61 loss in Salt Lake City, but the Mavericks bounced back with a 72-59 win over Dixie State in St. George, Utah.

Glimpse at the Mavs

After performances last weekend Sydni Brandon moved ahead as the national leader in assists-to-turnover ratio posting 3.44 assists for every turnover. As a team the Mavericks rank tenth nationally with a 1.24 assist-to-turnover ratio and fifth nationally in fewest turnovers with 247.

The Mavs defense only allows 50.9 points per game which makes them the third best defense in the nation. Their 35.5 field goal percentage defense leads the conference. Apart of that defense is Kelsie Siemons who has recorded 68 total blocked shots the season which is enough to lead the RMAC.

The Mavericks are led offensively by Jaylyn Duran was averages 20.1 points per game and Kylyn Rigsby who averages 9.0 points per game.  Karina Branson is the Mavericks most efficient starter posting a 48.8 field goal percentage. Off the bench Tori Catlett leads the team connecting on 56.0 percent of her shots.

National Rankings

Colorado Mesa checks in at No. 16 in this week's D2SIDA Women's Basketball Division II Media Poll. Within the South Central Region the Mavs ranks No. 2 along with Westminster. Angelo State holds the No. 1 slot in the region.

After the Mavs recent loss they dropped down to No. 19 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll. This poll was released on Feb 12 and is composed one head coach from each of the 24 NCAA Division II conferences.

Scouting Colorado Christian  

The Cougars are averaging 64.0 points per game and are shooting 41.8 percent from the field and 31.4 from the three-point line. In the Mavericks and Cougars last meeting the Mavs limited them to 37.8 percent from the field and 23.1 percent from the three-point line.

CCU is led by the RMAC's second leading scorer Jordan Baer who averages 17.5 points per game and 7.4 rebounds each game. Baer leads the team in rebounds and points.

The Cougars sit in ninth place with a 9-8 conference record.

Scouting Regis University

Regis sits just below Colorado Christian with an 8-9 RMAC record. As a team they shot 36.2 percent from the field however the Mavericks limited them to just 30.6 percent shooting in their last meeting.

Majestie Robinson leads the Rangers with 11.3 points per game and 2.8 assists per game. Shelby Espinosa leads the team in rebounds grabbing 10.6 per contest.

Next Up

After completing a four game road swing the Mavericks will return to Brownson Arena to close out the rest of the RMAC season. Fort Lewis and Adams State will travel to Grand Junction for games on Feb 22 and Feb 23, respectively. Colorado Mesa will honor the Mav's seniors on March 1 against Western State in the final home game of the regular season.
