GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa wrestling team bounced back in a big way on Friday evening in Brownson Arena. The Mavericks won six of the eight contested bouts and received two forfeits in a 37-6 win over New Mexico Highlands in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual.
Junior
Tim Romero got the night started for the Mavericks at 125 pounds. Romero scored a late takedown to earn an 8-7 win over Dominic Rivera. The Thornton native scored six points in the final period while only surrendering two escapes from cutting his opponent.
After the Cowboys took the bout at 133 pounds, the Mavericks rattled off seven straight victories that included a pair of forfeits and a pair of pins.
Seventh-ranked
Eduardo Penha earned a pin at 141 pounds giving the Mavericks a 9-3 lead in the dual. Penha led 8-3 before pinning Darian Manzanares at the 4:10 mark of the match.
The Mavericks second pin of the night came at 197 pounds where
Donnie Negus earned a pin in 1:15 over Luke Allan. Negus, wrestling two weights up, earned a quick takedown, putting Allan on his back for the victory by pin.
Seth Latham and
Nolan Krone each picked up major decision victories at 174 and 184 pounds respectively.
Colorado Mesa will be on the road next weekend for a pair of RMAC duals. They will wrestle against Colorado School of Mines on Wednesday evening before heading south for a battle with CSU-Pueblo on Thursday.
