GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's wrestling team crowned six champions in the Maverick Open on Sunday in Brownson Arena. The Open was the first-ever by the Maverick women's program and featured wrestlers from Schreiner, York, Life Pacific and a handful of unattached wrestlers.
Jennesis Martinez (101),
Anja Tschohl (116),
Marissa Gallegos (123),
Sierra Brown Ton (130),
Dalia Garibay (136) and
Alma Mendoza (143) all won their individual weight classes. All were round robins except for Garibay's win at 136 pounds.
Martinez finished ahead of Autumn Branson of York College after a pin at the 1:16 mark in the final bout of the weight while Tschohl earned a pair of tech fall wins on the way to the 116 pound title.
Redshirt freshman Marissa Gallego had three 10-0 tech fall wins her way to the 123 pound title while sophomore
Sierra Brown Ton defeated teammate
Cindy Zepeda by fall at 1:04 for the 130 pound championship.
Dalia Garibay won the 136 pound title in an eight-man bracket after defeating Martina Banuelos of Life Pacific 10-0 in the championship bout. The Brentwood, Calif. native had three 10-0 tech wins on her way to the title.
At 143 pounds,
Alma Mendoza went 2-0 on her way to the title. The Sequim, Wash. product won her first bout by tech fall then had a pin in her second match for the title.
The Mavericks will be off until the US Open and Olympic Team Trials qualifier on December 19-21 in Fort Worth, Texas.
