AZUSA, Calif.— Sophomores
Christian Albrechtsen and
Moises Cure combined for five consolation wins to highlight Colorado Mesa University's efforts on Friday at the ITA West Regional Tennis Championships.
Meanwhile, Maverick senior
Kristen Kirby saw her strong fall season come to an end in the round of 16 of the main women's singles draw as she was defeated 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 in a tight battle with sixth-seed Becky Chou of UC-San Diego.
"Kirsten played well enough to win and competed really hard," Maverick Coach
Dan MacDonald said. "There were lots of great points and long rallies."
"I'm so proud of that young lady. She wins with class and loses with class," MacDonald continued about Kirby, who went 9-2 throughout the fall season, which ended up coming to a close on Friday.
"It was an amazing fall season for her and her teammates."
In consolation matches, which were played under a single pro-set format, Cure won a pair of matches before taking a third by default. Albrechtsen had two wins, including his second over teammate
Steven Howe, who also won his first.
Mitchell Steadman also went 1-1 as did
Maike Waldburger in women's consolation action.
Meanwhile,
Lauren Thomas lost her Cougar Open bracket semifinal match, 6-3, 6-2.
