GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa wrestling team mounted a comeback against the Adams State Grizzlies on Thursday evening but came up just short in a 21-19 loss in Brownson Arena in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
After falling in the first two bouts of the night, seventh-ranked
Eduardo Penha earned a decision victory over Dylan Udero 6-4 at 141 pounds. Penha earned a pair of takedowns in the bout and earned a pair of escapes for the victory.
In the match of the night,
Jason Buhr defeated Koery Windham 3-2 at 165 pounds. The two wrestlers spent time in and out of the national rankings during the year. Buhr's first period takedown proved to be the difference in the bout.
Redshirt freshman
Nolan Krone earned a victory by the widest margin for the Mavericks on the evening, scoring a 16-3 major decision victory over William Tyler at 184 pounds.
Junior
TJ Lodermeier had a chance to make the dual really interesting at 197 pounds. On a pair of occasions, the Hinton, Okla. native had his opponent Khalil Gipson on his back. A pin would have secured a dual win for the Mavericks but he had to settle for the 7-2 decision victory.
The most shocking victory came at 285 pounds where redshirt freshman
Hunter Mooring pinned James Romero at the 4:32 mark of the second period. Romero came into the dual with a 5-1 mark in the conference with a pair of victories over ranked opponents.
The Mavericks will be back in action tomorrow evening at 7:30pm for a dual against New Mexico Highlands.
