No. 19 Mavs Welcome Regis, Colorado Christian to Brownson Arena

Friday’s game will begin at 3:30 pm in Brownson Arena

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Colorado Mesa Mavericks will look to extended their win streak and keep a perfect Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record this weekend as they take on Regis and Colorado Christian on Friday and Saturday night in Brownson Arena. They Mavericks have won the last 15 games and are 16-1 overall. 

Friday's game will take place at 3:30 pm against Regis and Saturday's game against Colorado Christian will take place at 5:30 pm.

After defeating Westminster last weekend the Mavericks took over as the No. 1 team in the RMAC standings with a perfect 13-0 record. Westminster fell to second place with a 12-1 record. The Mavericks are four games ahead of third place CSU Pueblo who owns a 9-4 record in conference play.

The Mavericks are shooting 41.5 percent (133-of-398) from the field and 33.4 percent (174-of-246) from three-point land. They are outscoring their opponents by a margin of 14.5 points per game. Jaylyn Duran continues to lead the RMAC in scoring with 20.5 points per game and is averaging 3.6 three-point field goals per game which leads the country. Grand Junction native Sydni Brandon is averaging 6.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game. She's owns a 3.7 assists-to-turnover ratio which leads the conference and is second best in the nation.

Karina Brandon leads the starting five in field goal percentage at 46.2 percentage. She's averaging 7.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Kelsey Siemons leads the Mavericks in three-point field goal percentage at 39.4 percent and has the second most three-point field goals (28) made behind Duran (61).

Sierra McNichol recorded the first double-double of her career with 10 points and 12 rebounds last weekend against Dixie State. She's played in every game off the bench for the Mavericks and is shooting 51.4 percent from the field.

Friday's game against Regis will feature a shoe drive present by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. Fans are welcome to bring new or slightly used shoes and receive a free small popcorn in exchange. The shoes will be donated to benefit people in need.

National Ranking

The Colorado Mesa Mavericks have been ranked for three consecutive weeks dating back to Jan 15. In this week's WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Top 25 Coaches' Poll the Mavericks moved up one spot to No. 19. The Mavericks represent the RMAC as the only school from this conference named to the poll.

Regional Rankings

In the South Central region the Mavericks own the No. 1 spot with the best record at 16-1. Angelo State and West Texas A&M follow the Mavericks for the No. 2 and No. 3 spots within the region. Colorado Foe Western Colorado earned a No. 9 spot in the region and CSU-Pueblo is receiving votes as of this week's poll which was released Jan 28.

The Mavericks are ranked No. 12 in the D2SIDA Women's Basketball National Poll which was released on Jan 29.

Scouting Regis

Regis sits 11th in the conference with a 6-7 record. The Rangers are shooting 36.0 percent from the field and 31.6 percent from the three-point line. They are led offensively by Majestie Robinson who is averaging 11.7 points per game. As for defense, Shelby Espinosa leads the RMAC in rebounds grabbing 10.1 per contents.

Regis has defeated the Mavs in the past two consecutive meetings. Last season the Mavericks lost in a double overtime game in Denver by a score of 67-74.

Scouting Colorado Christian

The Cougars roster includes Jordan Baer who is the second best scorer in the RMAC behind the Mav's Jaylyn Duran. She leads the rangers offensively with 18.6 points per contest. As a team they are shooting 42.0 percent from the field and 30.9 percent from the three-point line.

The Mavericks have defeated Colorado Christian in the past two meetings. The two met last year on Jan 13, 2018 in Brownson Arena where the Mavericks won 48-46.

Next Up

The Mavericks will travel to Utah for games against Westminster and Dixie State on Feb 8 and 9 at 5:30 pm. The game against Westminster will take place in Salt Lake City at the Behnken Field House. As for Dixie State the game it will take place in St. George at Burns Arena.
