YORK, Neb.— After winning their respective brackets in the York College Open individual tournament on Friday, Colorado Mesa University women's wrestling standouts
Sierra Brown Ton and
Carson Pipher each went 3-0 to lead the Mavericks' efforts in the York College Team Duals on Saturday.
The first-year Mavericks also received two wins from
Kaylee Lacy and
Alma Mendoza as well as a first CMU career win from
Ashley Keenan but were not able to overcome five forfeits in each dual dropping narrow dual decisions to Missouri Valley College (19-15), Ottawa University (Kan.) (20-19) and the University of Jamestown (N.D.) (25-18).
Against Missouri Valley, neither team fielded wrestlers at 101, 109 or 116 pounds as the Mavericks opened up a 10-0 lead with first-period pins by Brown Ton and Lacy. The Vikings then answered with a pin of their own at 136 pounds to cut the gap to 10-5 before Pipher scored a convincing 11-0 victory over LoriAnn Archuleta at 143 pounds.
Mendoza was then defeated 12-2 at 155 pounds before two forfeit wins at 170 and 191 gave the Vikings the dual.
Against Ottawa, the Mavericks grabbed a 10-5 lead thanks to a pin by Brown Ton in just 50 seconds and a forfeit win by Lacy at 130 pounds. Pipher then won 10-0 at 136 to extend the advantage to 14-5.
Amber Strong was then pinned at 143 before Mendoza returned the favor taking out the Braves' Randie Scoon in just 1:03 giving CMU a 19-10 lead that was just not quite enough two overcome forfeits in the last two weight classes.
The Mavericks were then down 10-0 to Jamestown after two forfeits and a double forfeit before a forfeit by Brown Ton and Keenan's maiden victory by fall over Cara Romeike at 130 tied the score.
Jamestown then went up 14-10 with a win over Strong at 136 before Pipher responded with a 10-4 decision win over Andrea Prince at 143. The Mavericks then went up 18-15 when Mendoza pinned Myranda Valasquez at 155 before two more forfeits gave the Jimmies the win.
The Mavericks have now finished the dual meet portion of their schedule with a 2-6 record and will now prepare for the WCWA National Championships on Feb. 8-9 in Atlanta.
