Woods breaks career digs record in 5-set heart-breaker

IRVINE, Calif.— Senior libero Taylor Woods became Colorado Mesa University's rally-scoring era (2001-Present) record holder for career digs in a heart-breaking 5-set loss to Azusa Pacific University on Saturday here at the Concordia Invitational.

Woods had 21 digs in the match and now has 1,591 in her career, surpassing Ashley Loftsgard's former mark of 1,578, set from 2005-08.  She needed just nine digs to break the record and did so in the second set, recording five digs in each of the first two frames.

Woods, who now ranks third in the Mavericks' all-time history behind only Amy Miller (2542; 1991-94) and Pam Glenn (1783; 1992-95) has recorded 68 digs in three matches this weekend.

CMU, now 1-2 on the weekend and the young season, dropped the opening two sets 25-18 and 25-22 but came back to win the third and fourth by 25-23 and 25-22 scores, respectively.  The Mavericks then jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the decisive fifth set before the Cougars (2-1) used a 7-2 run to go up 14-12 and earn a pair of match-points.

Hailey Crane erased the first of those with her career-high 10th kill before a block by Natalee Todd and Alyssa Chutka evened the set at 14.

The Cougars then came up with a block of their own to take a 15-14 lead before a Todd kill tied the set once again.  However, the momentum would be short lived as the Cougars won the final two points to take the match.

Kasie Gilfert led the Mavericks with 14 kills and seven blocks while hitting .306.  Todd also finished with nine kills and five blocks to go along with her .400 hitting percentage.

The Mavericks also had 14 total blocks but were guilty of 34 hitting errors.

They will close out the 6-team, 12-team tournament on Saturday evening against the host Concordia-Irvine Eagles at 9 p.m. MDT (8 p.m. Pacific).
