Mavericks crush host Eagles to cap California tourney with win

IRVINE, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team dominated nearly every statistical category and needed just 75 minutes to claim a 3-set (25-12, 25-21, 25-22) Saturday night victory over the host Concordia University-Irvine Eagles to finish the Concordia Invitational with a 2-2 record played over the last two days here at the CU Arena.

Led by a career-high 11 kills from Hailey Crane, the Mavericks finished the night with a 44-26 edge in kills.  They also had a 54-40 edge in digs, a 9-5 advantage in blocks and tallied eight service aces, twice as many as the Eagles, who slipped to 1-3 on the young season.

The Mavericks also hit .241 as a team while holding the Eagles to just a .087 efficiency.

Camille Smith hit .600 with six kills while Kasie Gilfert recorded eight kills on a .316 effort to finish the weekend with a team-high 47.  Both players also finished with five blocks apiece.

MacKenzie Edwards also added nine kills while Ashton Reese finished with six as part of the balanced effort.

Meanwhile, freshman Hannah Bokal tallied 17 assists, seven digs and a match-high seven digs while fellow setter Ara Norwood had 14 assists and seven digs.

The Mavericks never trailed in the opening set hitting an impressive .417 as a team as they scored the final five points of the set with Bokal at the service line. Crane had back-to-back kills to trigger that spurt.

The Mavericks were down 7-5 early in the second but went on a 9-2 run to take a 14-9 lead while working towards a 2-set lead thanks to another Crane kill.

The third set was a bit tighter and featured seven lead changes and three ties although the Mavericks were able to seize control with a 6-2 run to build a 23-19 lead.  Kerstin Layman had back-to-back service aces in the stretch, which led to the set and match win.

The Mavericks will play four more matches next weekend at the Rockhurst (Mo.) Volleyball Classic, starting Friday against the host Hawks, who got off to a 4-0 start after being tabbed 10th in the AVCA Division II Pre-Season Coaches' Poll.
