No.22 Mavericks Open Season Against Skyhawks

After it was announced last week that the Mavericks are beginning the season ranked inside the top 25 in the nation for the first time in program history, Colorado Mesa University will open up their season at home against Fort Lewis College. This will be the first of two meetings between these two teams this season, but only the second one will count towards their conference record.

When the Skyhawks came to Grand Junction last season, the Mavericks were able to walk away with an 11-7 victory. After allowing six goals in the first half and going into the break with a slim 7-6 lead, CMU made some second-half adjustments defensively to only give up one score for the remaining 30 minutes.

Jessica Cook and Olivia Hayden combined for seven of the Mavericks' 11 goals on the day, with four others contributing one goal apiece. Kierstin Elder took over in goal at the midway point for CMU, and she finished with five saves and only one goal allowed. The win gave the Mavericks their fourth straight victory at the time.

CMU will be playing six of their 14 games at Walker Field this season. They were 7-3 last season in games that were played in Grand Junction, which helped get them to third place in the conference. Only two teams (Lindenwood and Regis) finished with better home records than the Mavericks.

Game time is set for 12 p.m. at Walker Field.
