GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to the Dixie State Trailblazers in the Mavericks home opener. Due to weather throughout the day, the two teams played their doubles matches at 'The Bubble' before heading over to Elliott Tennis Center for the singles matches.
The Mavericks earned the doubles point after securing wins at both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
Kristen Kirby and
Emily Beckley defeated Yolanda Carlon and Maria Heras, 8-6 while
Taylor Hershey and
Rebecca Osterberg picked up an 8-2 win at No. 3.
Kirby also defeated Carlon at No. 1 singles 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to give Colorado Mesa a 2-0 lead.
At No. 5 singles,
Maike Waldburger earned a three-set win over Juliana Honczaruk 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 to push the Mavericks lead to 3-0.
Colorado Mesa dropped a pair of straight set matches at No. 4 and No. 6 singles and two three-setters, one at No. 2 and the was a thrilling tiebreak loss at No. 3 singles.
The Mavericks will take on Colorado College at 4pm tomorrow at Elliott Tennis Center.
