RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Colorado Mesa wrestling team took the long bus ride out to California to do battle with ninth-ranked Cal Baptist on Thursday evening. The Lancers came away with a 36-9 win over the Mavericks in their home gym in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Cal Baptist won eight of the ten bouts including seven of those by bonus points.
At 133 pounds, sophomore
Tim Romero secured his second win of the season with a 7-1 win over Mario Barrios. Romero earned three takedowns in the bout and was awarded a penalty point for stall calls. He surrendered just an escape.
The Lancers won the next four bouts with all of them coming by bonus points including a tech fall and a pin.
Bruno Nicoletti picked up a first period pin over Jacob Cooper at 174 pounds. Nicoletti surrendered an early takedown but escaped quickly. He then took Cooper down and turned him to earn the pin.
Cal Baptist would win the final three bouts of the evening.
The Mavericks will be back in action next Thursday when they head up to Gunnison for a showdown with RMAC rival Western State before heading over the mountains for the RMAC Championships next Saturday at the Olympic Training Center.
