Junior signal caller
Eystin Salum did it all in the win over Western State. Salum threw for five touchdowns and ran two more in to account for all seven of Colorado Mesa's touchdowns. He was honored by being named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week and the National Football Foundation - Colorado Chapter Player of the Week.Â
RIVAS INTS
Senior
Dustin Rivas has put the fear into opposing quarterbacks for three years now and isnt stopping during his senior season. Rivas picked off Western State for his 17th career interception, tying the Colorado Mesa all-time mark. He is now tied with Vic Dutandette who played for the Mavericks in 1985-86.Â
ALL HANDS ON DECK
Seven different receivers caught passes in the season opener.
Marcus Hines,
Peter Anderson,
David Tann,
Virnel Moon and
Isaiah Smith all caught touchdown passes and
Brett Ojiyi led all receivers with four catches. Anderson led in yards with 85 including a 55-yard touchdown catch.
RETURNERS
A trio of Mavericks will take on a majority of the return duties this year and after game one, they didnt disappoint.
Virnel Moon returned three kicks for 147 (49 yards/return) including two for touchdowns that were called back due to penalty.
Dustin Rivas and
Josh Brown handled the punt returns and averaged 21 yards per return.
NEXT MAN UP
With Tommy Saager continuing to heal from injury and
Carlos Aviles out this week, the Maverick linebacking core has a next man up mentality.
Marco Garcia will stepped in last week and secured six tackles while
Alec Barcellos spelled Saager in the middle and finished with seven tackles.
THE RED ZONE
During the 2016 season, Colorado Mesa was one of the top teams in the country when reaching the red zone. In game one of the 2017 season, they were perfect connecting on both opportunities with both going for touchdowns.
BAD BOYS
The Mavericks committed 11 penalties for for 81 yards in the opener. That totaled matched a season-high from a year ago.
