GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The No. 11 Colorado Mesa University softball team dominated both offensively and defensively to sweep the doubleheader against CSU-Pueblo Saturday (April 29).
The Mavericks won game one 11-2 and posted an 8-0 shutout in game two. Both games ended early by run rule.
Maggie Manwarren led off game one with a bunt single to third base and advanced to third on a double up the middle by Alex Dufour. Manwarren scored the game's first run on a ground out by
AnnMarie Torres.
Manwarren drove in the Mavericks lone run in the second inning with a single up the middle.
Mesa scored two runs on three singles and a double in the third. With two outs, an error by the CSUP shortstop allowed two runs to cross the plate. Alex Dufour drove in the fifth run of the inning with a single to left field.
CSUP scored on a sacrifice fly and a double to right field in the fifth.
CMU finished with an 11-4 edge in hits. CSUP also committed three errors in the game.
McKenzie Surface (22-4) earned the win giving up two runs on four hits and striking out five.
Kimbri Herring was nearly perfect in the circle for the Mavericks in game two giving up only one hit, a single, and fanning six.
Abby Toller put the Mavericks on the board with a three-run homer to left field in the second. She led off the fifth inning with her second homer of the game to left field.
Mesa added three more runs in the fifth, including a two-run homer to center field by
Brooke Hodgson.
Hailey Hinson drove in one run with a single to left center to end the game early in the sixth.
Colorado Mesa (38-8, 33-4) will close out the four-game series with CSU-Pueblo (19-27, 16-12).
