GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa softball team closed out the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of CSU-Pueblo on Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
In game one, the Mavericks benefitted from the long ball in an 8-0 mercy-rule shortened game.
AnnMarie Torres got the scoring started in the first inning with a three-run bomb to right field to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead. It was her eighth home run of the season and RBIs 51, 52, and 53 in her freshman campaign.
The score would remain that way until the fourth inning when senior
Baylee Boren singled home Kelli Mrofcza to give the Mavericks a 4-0 cushion.
In the fifth inning,
Brooke Hodgson delivered her 18
th home run of the season a three-run shot to right center to give the Mavericks a 7-0 lead.
Senior
Sarah Phillis gave the knockout punch later in the fifth with a solo shot to left center to make it 8-0. It was her fourth home run of the season.
McKenzie Surface won her 23
rd game of the season after allowing no runs on five hits, walked one and struck out four in her five innings of work.
In game two, Colorado Mesa did all their scoring in two innings in a 13-7 win in the regular season finale.
Brooke Hodgson and
Sarah Phillis each hit their second home run of the day while freshman
Bailey Kleespies hit her first of the day in the win.
Phillis finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs driven in. Her home run in the six-run sixth was a grand slam and her fifth homer of the season.
Hodgson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in. Her home run in the seven-run second inning was a two-run shot for her 19
th of the season.
Kleespies finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. She hit a solo shot in the sixth inning for her second of the season.
Andy Hancock improved to 6-1 in the circle. She allowed six runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out one in the win.
Colorado Mesa is now 40-8 on the season and finish 35-4 in the conference.
The Mavericks will play at 3:15pm on Thursday to open the RMAC Tournament at CMU Softball Stadium.
