GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The No. 12 Colorado Mesa University softball team advanced to day two of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament with a 6-2 win over New Mexico Highlands Thursday (May 4).
The Mavericks will face Chadron State Friday (April 5) at 10:45 am.
CMU got on the board early with two runs in the first.
Maggie Manwarren reached first with a base hit through the left side. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by
AnnMarie Torres. Alex Dufour also scored on the play after getting on base with a walk.
The Cowgirls tied it up with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Christian Bobian reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and scored on a double by Victoria Gonzales. Brittany Moya, who pitch ran for Gonzales, scored on a double by Jade Callister.
The Mavericks scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a fielding error by the shortstop.
CMU manufactured three more runs on three hits in the fifth.
Mesa out-hit Highlands 10-6, but
Baylee Boren, who was hitting in the nine hole, was the only Maverick with two hits in the game.
Kimbri Herring (14-1) earned the win allowing two runs, both unearned, and giving up five hits in 4.1 innings.
McKenzie Surface earned her first save of the season allowing just one hit in 2.2 innings.
Colorado Mesa (43-6) will face Chadron State Friday (April 5) at 10:45 am.
