DENVER – The Colorado Mesa University softball team rallied behind explosive offensive play to open the season with a pair of wins Saturday (Feb. 4).

Mesa opened the day with a 22-4 win over a Neb.-Kearney and finished with a 10-1 win over MSU Denver.

The Mavericks had 10 different players record a hit against the Lopers, including Baylee Boren who batted 4-4 with two RBIs and four runs scored.

Mesa wasted no time scoring runs hanging a seven spot in the top of the first on four hits. The highlight of the inning was a grand slam by designated hitter Bailey Kleespies.

All eight of Mesa's batters in the second inning reached base and would score three runs on three hits in the inning.

CMU's lead grew to 21-0 following a 10-run third inning and one run in the fourth.

UNK scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and both teams would plate a run in the fifth.

McKenzie Surface, the RMAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, earned the complete game win striking out eight, walking three and scattering seven hits.

The second game of the game pitted CMU, the defending RMAC Regular Season Champions, and MSU Denver, the reigning RMAC Tournament Champions.

The Mavericks opened with two runs on four runs in the first and two more runs in the second on three hits.

Kellie Mrofcza's two-run homer that scored Kaila Jacobi, who hit a lead-off double, completed the scoring in the third.

Jacobi recorded her second straight hit of the game with a grand slam in the top of the fourth to complete the scoring for CMU.

The Roadrunners lone run came in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a pair of doubles.

Kimbri Herring earned her first win for the Mavericks striking out three and giving up four hits.

CMU scored a run in nine of its first 10 innings this season.

CMU (2-0) will close the weekend with games against UNK and MSUD Sunday (Feb. 4).
