Box Score WHITTIER, Calif. – Colorado Mesa swept the season-opening California trip with a 9-7 win over NCAA Division III Whittier College on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 11) at Memorial Stadium.
Colorado Mesa earned a first half shutout as the led 3-0 heading into the break.
Calen Ketcham,
Jack Griffin, and
Chad Merrick all netted goals in the half.
The second half became more interesting as the Poets outscored the Mavericks and forced 23 turnovers in the game. The Poets finished the game on a 3-0 run.
Colorado Mesa was also whistled for nine penalties for 5:30 while Whittier was only called for one violation for a minute.
Reece Callies paced the Maverick attack with a second-half hat trick.
Michael Marino helped the cause going 13-for-19 on faceoffs and scooped up seven groundballs. The Mavericks won the groundball battle 41-28 as they recorded double-digit groundballs in every quarter of play.
Net minder
Remi Reeves picked up his second win of the season in net, recording 12 saves.
Colorado Mesa will be back on the road in two weeks when they head to Kansas and Missouri for a three-game swing.
